A persistent chemical or fishy odor that lingers for weeks or months after application is one of the clearest red flags. Properly cured spray foam should not have a strong smell once it sets, which typically happens within 24 to 48 hours. Mechanical scraping and chiseling. For open cell foam, a long, flat blade, sometimes called a foam knife or a specialized scraper, can shear the material away from framing in sheets. Open cell foam is softer and generally easier to remove this way, though it still takes time and creates a lot of debris. Closed cell foam is denser and bonds more aggressively to wood, so contractors often use a combination of chisels, reciprocating saws with specialty blades, and sometimes an angle grinder fitted with a wire wheel to break the bond without gouging the framing underneath.

Dry ice blasting. This has become one of the preferred methods for larger jobs, particularly when the goal is to strip foam off framing that needs to stay intact and reusable. Dry ice pellets are blasted at high pressure against the foam, and the extreme cold causes it to become brittle and shatter away from the surface. It leaves no chemical residue and does not require water, which is helpful in areas where moisture is already a concern.
