We switched to material cost plus markup model instead of fixed-price per board foot. That way when prices fluctuate we are protected. Clients get a quote good for 30 days.
We use two core employees who are certified and do QC, and 1099 subs for labor. Our comp rates are much more manageable. Check with your state on classification rules.
Closed cell all the way for zone 5 exterior walls. You get your vapor retarder built in at about 2 inches. Open cell needs an additional vapor barrier which adds cost and complexity.
