MemberApplied 2 lb closed cell in an unvented attic about 2 years ago. Client called saying the foam has turned yellow/amber. Is this a defect? Should I be worried?

MemberVery normal! Closed cell foam yellows and darkens over time when exposed to UV light and air. It is purely cosmetic and does not affect performance at all.

MemberAgreed, it is just oxidation. If the foam is in an attic with any light penetration it will yellow faster. Performance-wise your R-value and air seal are unchanged.

MemberThat is a relief! Should I coat it with anything? I have seen some people apply intumescent paint for fire protection.

MemberFor an accessible attic you may want to check your local code. Some jurisdictions require a thermal barrier over exposed foam. It is a fire code requirement not just about color.

MemberIntumescent coatings like No-Burn or DC315 are your best bet if code requires a thermal barrier and you do not want to hang drywall. Make sure the coating is ICC-ESR listed for your specific foam.

MemberExcellent info! Will check local code and look into the intumescent coatings. Thanks!
