Welcome to the June 2026 edition of our monthly spray foam industry news roundup. Our team has been tracking product launches, regulatory updates, industry events, and market developments from across the SPF industry. Here’s what you need to know this month.
SPFA Announces 2026 Annual Convention Dates
The Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA) has announced that its 2026 Annual Convention will take place October 14-17 in Nashville, Tennessee. The event will include the SPFA Professional Certification exams, Contractor of the Year awards, technical seminars, and a full trade show floor. Early registration discounts are available until August 1. Visit spfa.org for details.
DOE Study Confirms Energy Savings from SPF in Residential Applications
A new study released by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Technology Office confirms that homes with spray polyurethane foam insulation in attics and walls consume an average of 22.4% less energy for heating and cooling compared to homes with conventional fiberglass insulation. The study, which tracked 1,200 homes across eight climate zones over a three-year period, also found that SPF homes showed significantly reduced HVAC maintenance costs and extended equipment lifespans.
New Blowing Agent Technology Reduces Global Warming Potential
Several major SPF manufacturers have announced the transition to next-generation low-GWP blowing agents for their 2 lb. closed-cell foam systems. The new hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) blowing agents achieve GWP values below 10 — down from the HFC-based agents currently in widespread use (GWP: 700-1,400). The transition is expected to accelerate following EPA’s finalization of the AIM Act provisions for the foam blowing agent sector.
Covestro Expands Production Capacity for MDI
Covestro has announced a $340 million investment to expand its methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) production capacity at its Baytown, Texas facility. MDI is a primary raw material in all spray polyurethane foam systems. The expansion is expected to come online in late 2027 and is projected to reduce the supply constraints that drove SPF price increases in 2023-2024.
California Updates Spray Foam Building Code Requirements
The California Building Standards Commission has adopted amendments to the 2025 California Residential Code that affect spray foam insulation applications in Climate Zones 12-16. Key changes include updated ignition barrier requirements for spray foam in garages and new vapor retarder specifications for unvented roof assemblies. California contractors should review Cal. Res. Code Sections R316 and R806.5 for updated requirements. See our Resources page for a link to the full code document.
Record Attendance at World of Concrete 2026
The World of Concrete trade show in Las Vegas in February 2026 saw record attendance, with a 23% increase in spray foam and polyurea contractor representation compared to 2025. The surge reflects continued growth in roof coating, waterproofing, and protective coating applications for SPF. The Foam Insulation Review team was on the floor — look for our event coverage in the Events section.
Market Outlook: SPF Contractor Demand Strong Through 2027
Industry analysts at Construction Market Data are projecting continued double-digit growth in the residential spray foam installation market through 2027, driven by rising energy costs, stricter building energy codes in major markets, and increased consumer awareness of whole-house air sealing benefits. The labor shortage for certified SPF applicators continues to create opportunities for contractors, with average project backlogs across the U.S. running 4-8 weeks.
